Part of Walther’s Meister Manufaktur program, the PPQ Q5 Match SF Vintage Edition is a rare example of extravagance combined with sheer utility. The Vintage retains all of the features that the standard PPQ Q5 Match handgun is known for, but comes fully equipped with a wide array of upgrades to optimize both performance and aesthetics. The color case hardening is perhaps the most distinct feature of the Vintage. Color case hardening is a traditional process that has been used in gunsmithing for centuries, and offers several benefits to the weapons it is applied to. The color case hardening process begins by adding carbon to the metal with a granulate of wood, leather, and bone charcoal, before being quenched in water – causing the steel to oxidize and creates oxide layers of varying thickness. This results in a surface hardness rating of around 45 – 55 HRC, and provides exceptional resistance to wear and the elements. An ultra-thin 1/1000” layer of special protective paint is then applied to bolster the Vintage’s strength even further. In addition to significantly increasing durability, case hardening gives the metal a distinct and visually appealing marbled exterior, with dynamic hues of green, yellow, brown, blue, and even magenta appearing on the surface. Each case hardening process results in different color patterning from the last, and like a fingerprint, each Vintage handgun it truly unique. Other features of the Vintage include checkered wooden grips which perfectly complements its retro aesthetic, and a flared magazine well is included to accommodate faster reloads.
