With the popularity of percussion cap revolvers on the rise, Remington released the Model 1858 as a contender to Colt’s designs. The Model 1858 entered production in the years leading up to the American Civil War, and saw service on both sides of the conflict. They quickly gained a reputation for accuracy, and featured a “topstrap” solid frame design. This top strap construction offered better durability when compared to the open-top revolvers that dominated the market, and its simple internal lockwork mechanism made these revolvers very reliable. These revolvers also featured “safety slots” milled into the cylinder where the hammer could rest, eliminating the threat of accidental discharge if dropped.
Uberti’s Model 1858 Revolver is nearly identical to the original, featuring milled safety slots in the cylinder, walnut grips and a brass trigger guard.
